Ban on smoking in public places Free Essays
Since the beginning of civilization, man has always persuaded his interests for recreation by using tobacco as a frontline substance for his leisure. As time passed by, more production of tobacco started till it reached a stage where today there are numerous cigarette companies selling their cancer sticks at the most reasonable rates. The desire to light a cigarette has always been one of the top most priorities of people who indulge in smoking and in their pretext of soothing their desire for a smoke; they more often than not forget the amount of hazard and trouble caused by the smoke emitting from their cigarettes. We will write a custom essay sample on Ban on smoking in public places or any similar topic only for you Order Now Cigarette smoking is one of the worst ways of self destruction and even after knowing its negative impact on the body, a smoker always tends to overlook the danger associated with it and continues to smoke irrespective of the location in which he is standing. The issue of raising a ban on smoking in public has always been a controversial one and has always been taking the side of a non-smoker than people who are indulgent in public smoking. Non- smokers always tend to move away from a location where a smoker is footing and always have a feeling of their sentiments being abused or overlooked by a person who is smoking near them. The history of the smoking ban can be dated to the sixteenth century when the Pope Urban VII made it mandatory law of smokers not being welcomed near the premises of the church and also issues a penalty for people who violated this law. This law however did not catch as much attention as the issue is catching on the twenty-first century. Today because of the advancements of medical science and research on the adverse effects of smoking, we have been able to pin point the negative impacts of smoking on a smoker and the passive smoker near by to him. The following will shed some light on the physical negative impacts of smoking on a smoker: ââ¬ËSmoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, complicated pregnancy. Smoking by pregnant women result in fetal injury, premature birth, and low birth weight. Smoking is associated with a reduced bone mass and an increased risk of osteoporosisââ¬â¢ (Courtesy: Cheap Cigarettes, ââ¬Å"Effects of Cigarette Smokingâ⬠. Retrieved on December 2, 2008 from http://www. cheap-cigarettes. com/Effects_of_Cigarette_Smoking. asp) There are evidences too on the fact of smoking affecting post operational procedures, especially related with ones in which transfusion of blood is on a higher side because of the attempt to join bones or tissues which due to accidents and other trauma are disarrayed from each other. Apart from knowing these entire statistics a persistent smoker would continue to smoke and silently destroy his body, but for that soothing experience the smoker might make some innocent bystander a partner of his misery, by making him a passive smoker. The second hand smoke inhaled by a passive smoker is considered to very dangerous and it causes a lot more harm and eventuality than what it looks at the moment. The worst effect however of passive smoking is on children, and the following evidence will vindicate the point of having smoking bans in public places due to its adverse effects on children: ââ¬ËExposure to tobacco smoke doubles the chances of your child for illnesses like bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. They are also more likely to suffer from ear infections (glue ear), tonsillitis, and asthma. It may damage a childââ¬â¢s olfactory functionââ¬â¢ (Courtesy: ââ¬Å"Passive smokingâ⬠. Retrieved on December 2, 2008 from http://www. stopsmokingtoday. com/dync/13/Passive_Smoking. html) Legislators and law makers understood the total provocation being inhaled by passive smoking and brought the necessary amendments to the laws of the state by banning smoking in public places. The need for the law to amend was felt by lot of people who were unnecessarily being forced to hazardous health conditions for no fault of their own. Smoking which were rampant in leisure places like pubs and restaurants were the most harmful, as a majority of people have a habit of smoking along with taking intakes of alcohol. This nature of these smokers brought the non smoking populace visiting such leisure outlets in very uncomfortable positions and in one way brought an infringement of the constitution to these victims of passive smoking. There was a nationwide applause for the banning of smoking in public places and a majority of the nation was giving it thumbs up and also considered it an important decision which was taken to curb smokers from spreading any amount chances of passive smoking to non smokers. The following evidence will shed light on the nationââ¬â¢s opinion of having a smoking ban in public places: ââ¬ËGallupââ¬â¢s 2004 consumption habits survey reveals that the American public is fairly accepting of such ban. A majority of 58%Americans currently say they favor a ban in their state that would make it illegal to smoke in workplaces, restaurants and barsââ¬â¢. (Courtesy: Alec M. Gallup, Frank Newport , ââ¬Å"The Gallup Poll: Public Opinion 2004â⬠.Page 306. Retrieved on December 2, 2008. Gallup Organization. Published by Rowman Littlefield, 2006) There are a lot of advantages that can be grouped with the banning of smoking in public places. Firstly a commuter or a non smoker can have fresh whiffs of air without the mixture of tobacco endorsed smoke hovering around. Secondly the ban itself makes the smoker smoke less which in turn is helping him from reducing the health hazards which he would eventually inflict on himself over the period of time. The ban on smoking in one way slows down the process of self damage that smokers tend to endure with their constant puffing. It has estimated that around thousands of Americans die every year due to active and passive smoking, and the ban would definitely help the figure of passive smoking by a great extent. The ban comes with a whooping of $50 for the first violation and $75 for repetitive violations. This becomes more deterrent for an active smoker and eventually brings him on the brink of leaving the habit or the least bringing down his no. of cigarettes by a good amount. Another big advantage related with the ban, is that the risk of fire catching up in factories or other places to due to a burning cigarette is greatly reduced and it brings the work place into a much safer and a cleaner zone. Also it helps saves the energy consumed by ventilators that are required to recycle the air in such places. However there are certain sets of disadvantages of such a ban too and the most primary one is they way smokers get into more hazardous situations in smoking zones. Here due to a large amount of smoke gathering the ventilation is slower which results in itchiness of the eyes and other lung problems because of the amount of passive smoking inhaled by active smokers. This somehow gives smokers a second class treatment as it becomes acceptable for the government for non smokers not to undergo minimal passive smoking but to allow massive passive smoking for active smokers in such zones. A lot of restaurants and bars feel the crunch as their smoking customers refrain from coming to them and thus it bring a drop to their turnovers. In todayââ¬â¢s high stress working atmospheres, employees are feeling more frustrated as somehow the tension which they could feel being released by their smoking has been feverously curbed. Smoking ban is one of the most righteous decisions of the government helping non smokers from the unwanted dangers of nicotine filled smokes. However when the law was being implemented not much attention has been given to smokers rights and at times it is becoming a little hypocritical situation. Nevertheless the main objective of such a ban bring back a life to their citizens which could be void of at least one addiction and would be more fruitful to them in terms of having a hale and hearty standard of living. In Privacy And Security For Cloud Computing -Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The In Privacy And Security For Cloud Computing? Answer: Introducation It is very important that Webb stores should not fully rely on the encryption services offered by the cloud vendors. As encryptions services consumer, huge resources, cloud vendors offer minimal encryption services. Instead Webb stores should also use encryption at their end before sending the data on the cloud. They also ensure that encryption key is located in on premise locations only and not on cloud. Restricted access to employees: People should have restricted access based on their role and should see only the data they need. Critical data should be read only so that no one can change it. Using RSA Secure ID systems for generating real time passwords and extra layer of prevention (Khanezaei, Hanapi, 2014) Ensure that all the machines have latest anti-viruses and all the fixes whether they belong to software, operating systems or any other should be installed as soon as possible. The only way to ensure is that controlling the updates features centrally and do not give users the choice of not installing updated (Hashizume, et al., 2013). Recent attack on NHS hospitals of UK by malware WannaCry was happened because the company did not update the latest fix by Microsoft which Microsoft released 2 month before this ransomware attack. Describe the benefits and issues that would be the result of your deployment of these security measures. Using encryption at Webb stores before sending data to the cloud is highly effective and while transmitting also, data is encrypted. Also, this will provide another layer of data protection and maintain confidentiality since even cloud vendors will do no have access to your data. Restricting access will ensure that only the key people have access to important functions like edit the data (Pearson, 2013) Secure ID systems that will generate real time password will add multi factor authentication and even if one of the password of user is leaked, still the intruders will not able to enter the system due to non-verification of RSA secure password. Ensuring updated version of every tool will ensure the protection because these tools and operating systems found the vulnerabilities in their systems from time to time and release fixes to remove these vulnerabilities (Rittinghouse, Ransome, 2016) What are the risks associated with migrating this mission critical database to the cloud? You should name and describe each risk that you identify that applies to: The database Data loss risks applies to the database. In case of a provider going of a business or suffers from technical problem at their end, there is a risk of losing the complete databased for the Webb stores. Data removal risk: This data is mission critical and suppose Webb stores wants to remove any data from their database, it will be removed from its database but how it will be permanently removed from the cloud as cloud is maintaining multiple copies at multiple locations. The IaaS infrastructure Compliance risks: There are rules and polices of Cloud computing designed by the Australian and New Zealand government and each IaaS Infrastructure must abide by those polices. There are policies that prevent vendors from storing data outside the country but cloud vendors maintain numerous copies of their Cloud and stored them in their data centers across different parts of the world. There are various Audits like SAS 70 and many more and each cloud vendor must furnish the details of conducting these audits and thus it is mandatory that cloud vendor must abide by all such policies. Vendor lock in risks: It is possible that IaaS vendor has suddenly increase the prices of their services or there can also be any other conflict and thus, Webb stores want to move their data out of the cloud on some other vendor cloud or on their premise, how it will be handled. Sometimes vendors claim their proprietary data if data is created or analyzed by using their tool, how such things will be handled is a big risk (ALi, Khan, Vasilakos, 2015). The communications between Webbs and their IaaS database in the cloud Data leakage risks: There is risk of intruders and attackers during data communication between Webbs and their IaaS database (Chang, 2015) Identity Access management risk: There is risk of identity verification and if right authorized person is accessing the data. Webbs is considering the use of the Cloud for backup and possibly also for archival of records. What are the risks and issues associated with backing up data to the cloud? You should name and describe each risk that you identify that applies to: Backing up data to the Cloud Too much time in restoring backup: Backing up the data is used so that in case anything goes wrong, backup data can be used. Now, Webb must ensure the timely retrieval of their backup data from the cloud. Restoring data from cloud using bandwidth will be very slow as compared to the restoring the backup from the tapes (Nicolini, et al., 2015) Backup Windows size: For backup, Data needs to be moved from machines to servers on a continuous basis and thus it will be consuming the bandwidth making the overall network slow (Yao, Lu, Zhu, 2014) Storage of data in the Cloud Data privacy risk: Webb stores having the confidential information related to payment details of customers and many more and any compromise of the cloud security vendor can put the companys data on risk iii. Retrieval of data from the cloud. Identity Risk: Cloud vendors do not have strong mechanism in place to distinguish between the authentic traffic and malicious traffic which is a very high risk for the Webb stores. Network risk: Cloud vendor will send the data after decryption to your systems and if the Webb stores is not using encryption/decryption at their end, unencrypted data transmission over the network can be very much vulnerable to attackers and intruders. How does Webbs use of a Cloud backup affect their DR plans? Describe how you see that their backup and restore strategy will change as a result of this service. Earlier backup was maintained on the tapes in-house and hence retrieval is pretty much fast however in case of outsourcing backup services also to the cloud vendor, Disaster recovery plan must be changed. In this case, DR plans will make use of bandwidth and thus Webb stores should ensure that it is using high speed internet so that restoration can happen very quickly. Webb stores also plan to conduct a pilot project regarding restoring the backup and can analyses the time needed, costs and bandwidth requirements (Couto, et al., 2014). How should Webbs protect access to these services that they are now moving to the Cloud? Describe what you would recommend to Webbs Board to protect access to: Their IaaS infrastructure, Webb stores should give access to only authorized person based on their role. For example, a person responsible for buying should see only the relevant details based on his role and not everything that is stored on the cloud. Another way is to use services of specialized security and Access management vendors like RSA Secure ID that generates a password on real time basis and involves multi-factor authentication (Khalil, Khreishah, Azeem, 2014). This will drastically reduce any unauthorized access. Their Ms SQL Server 2012 R2 cloud instance, Webb stores should use encryption at their end also and do not rely solely on the encryption and security services of the cloud network. In this case, if the data of the cloud is compromised, Webb stores data will still be encrypted. Web stores must ensure that it is storing the data encryption key somewhere else and not on the cloud. Their Cloud network infrastructure The biggest challenge here is that cloud vendor does not have any firewalls that can differentiate the data from the Webb stores and the data coming from malicious users. In such cases, they should ensure that cloud vendor is using the virtual cloud firewall using virtual security device that will be deployed within your tenant environment and separate customer traffic from malicious traffic. Also, Webb stores should clearly bring this topic in contract with the cloud vendors and also adds clause of penalty in case of any default. Their Cloud backup and restore infrastructure challenges, security issues as well as how these issues can be solved. Backup and restoring is a time taking activity and involves a lot of challenges. It is recommended that Webb stores should ask their vendor to conduct a Pilot project where they will be showcasing their capability how fast they can restore the back up and also Webb stores should setup the Service Level agreements (SLAs) that restoration must happen within this time frame otherwise there will be a penalty. Also, there should be clauses like network should be up and available more than 99% of the time and any downtime must be communicated 2 weeks in advance (Almorsy, Grundy, Muller, 2016). Webb stores also need to educate its IT users how to handle phishing emails because clicking on malicious emails by any user on a network can pose a risk to entire network. Children Of The Forest Essays - African Pygmies,
Children Of The Forest Sect.007 Mar.9, 1999 Children of the Forest is a narrative written by Kevin Duffy. This book is a written testament of an anthropologist's everyday dealings with an African tribe by the name of the Mbuti Pygmies. My purpose in this paper is to inform the reader of Kevin Duffy's findings while in the Ituri rainforest. Kevin Duffy is one of the first and only scientists to have ever been in close contact with the Mbuti. If an Mbuti tribesman does not want to be found, they simply won't be. The forest in which the Mbuti reside in are simply to dense and dangerous for humans not familiar with the area to enter. Without them he would simply be wandering aimlessly in the forest. It was very important for Kevin Duffy to win the respect of the tribe when he arrived. The Mbuti are one of the most fascinating of all the uncivilized peoples of the world. This tribe inhabits equatorial Africa near the city of Kisangani in Zaire in the Ituri rainforest. The Mbuti, being the smallest people on earth, live in the most inaccessible place on earth. An Mbuti tribe is almost impossible to find in such a dense forest. The tribe's men and women are only about four and a half foot tall yet they navigate though rich and dense forestry daily in the search for meat and fruit. The Mbuti greatly acknowledge their beloved forest as the supplier of all their worldly needs and possessions. The forest supplies them with food, clothing, shelter, and to them, affection. The Mbuti treat the forest as their parents and see themselves as it's children. They often sing to it in times joy and pray to the forest in times of remorse. Duffy becomes a fly-on-the-wall among this particular Mbuti clan. Not by spying on them, but becoming a friend, a very good friend. The Mbuti trusted him like a brother and invited him into their lives to share everything from the birth Mazero's new child to the death of Ndima, one of the tribes' elders. He was even allowed to film the Mbuti's famous elephant hunt. To achieve this kind of trust among an alien culture is a phenomenal feat. The elephant hunt was the first story that depicted the actual way that the Mbuti hunted and shared their shared their rewards from a hunt. The entire tribe set out in order to search for an elephant for a feast. All the males of the tribe, regardless of age left with spear in hand. Hunting elephants is a very serious threat to Mbuti life. An injured elephant can probably kill many Mbuti simply out of shear rage. Every hunter proceeded with the utmost caution. When an elephant was spotted, everyone stayed back as one of the lead hunters, Arumba, stepped up to take aim at the elephant. The first time, he was unsuccessful because the elephant galloped away right before he had a chance to strike, it took a few more hours to re-track the creature. When it was spotted again Arumba crept up with great stealth and ease and struck the elephant with the spear. Arumba's spear entered deep into the side of it's target. The elephant let out a screech of pain and galloped off again. The Mbuti hun ters then followed the blood trail of the wounded elephant and waited for it to die. They followed this particular elephant for approximately two hours before it stopped running. Word was sent back to camp that an elephant was wounded and that they should be ready to move very soon. Later, the elephant was found again, swaying on it's feet fighting to stay alive. One of the hunters through a stick and hit the elephant in the head, it simply let out a yell, but did not move. This animal is dead, said one of the hunters. They soon approached it and jabbed it lightly with the spear once more, it didn't even budge. Then the elephant dropped to the ground, it was dead now. Arumba checked to see if the massive animal was really dead one more time by touching the elephant's eyelid with his spear, it didn't even

The eNotes Blog The past is an undiscovered continent A Discussion with MartinAmis
The past is an undiscovered continent A Discussion with MartinAmis This past Sunday, I was fortunate to catch a reading and discussion with British novelist Martin Amis when he passed through town. Amis (author of Timeââ¬â¢s Arrow, London Fields, Money, and more) was there to discuss his latest novel, Lionel Asbo: State of England. But what was advertised as a promotional stop on a book tour soon became so much more, as Amis touched on everything, eloquently bouncing from Mitt Romney to the Holocaust, and from Space Invaders to ââ¬Å"chavs,â⬠with so much in between. Read on for a taste of this masterââ¬â¢s thoughtsâ⬠¦ On how to be a novelist: Upon taking his seat before us, an awestruck audience of fanboys and girls, the author brushed over his hellos and immediately launched into unexpected and honest advice. In a total of three opening sentences, Amis remarked on the duties of both a voter in the upcoming presidential elections and on the novelist. A few choice comments about Romney, which I cannot repeat here, made his opinion on that front plainly known. Meanwhile, his comments on the role of an author were actually more astounding, given that he recited W. H. Audenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Novelistâ⬠to expound on his thoughts. He preceded this with his opinion that the author must be grounded in his emotions; he must be ordinary to the point of banality. Then, of the poet, he recited, Encased in talent like a uniform, The rank of every poet is well known; They can amaze us like a thunderstorm, Or die so young, or live for years alone. Whereas the novelist, he continued, mustâ⬠¦ Become the whole of boredom, subject to Vulgar complaints like love, among the Justà Be just, among the Filthy filthy too, And in his own weak person, if he can, Must suffer dully all the wrongs of Man. On aging: Amis transitioned from there into a topic that has pervaded his work lately: that of the ever-growing past. In fact, in person he spoke almost the exact words that appear at the beginning of his second-most recent novel, The Pregnant Widow: This is the way it goes. In your mid-forties you have your first crisis of mortality (death will not ignore me); and ten years later you have your first crisis of age (my body whispers that death is already intrigued by me). But something very interesting happens to you in between. As the fiftieth birthday approaches, you get the sense that your life is thinning out, and will continue to thin out, until it thins out into nothing. And you sometimes say to yourself: That went a bit quick Then fifty comes and goes, and fifty-one, and fifty-two. And life thickens out again. Because there is now an enormous and unsuspected presence within your being, like an undiscovered continent. This is the past. When we age, life, Amis says, becomes a retrospection of the past. After a certain age, you come to realize this is a good thing; the past is an undiscovered continent, which only you can visit. We fixate on memories, he said, but most especiallyà erotic memories. (Makes sense given that The Pregnant Widowà is the story of a man thinking back to his twenties, when the world was in the flux of the sexual revolution.) He continued, You think about how things went with women, how they went with children. Saul Bellow spoke to his friend on his death bed, Iââ¬â¢ve been thinking. Now which is it? Is it: there goes a man or there goes a jerk?ââ¬â¢ And his friend, Karl, said, ââ¬ËThere goes a man.ââ¬â¢ And Saul said, ââ¬ËOK. Iââ¬â¢ll take your word for it.ââ¬â¢ When you think about the fact that Bellow had five marriages and four children, you know that he wasnt thinking at that moment of his Nobel Prize, or his career. With the death of his close friend Christopher Hitchens last December, Amis has had more than his fair share of the weight of death on his mind. In a grave moment, the author touched on his friends passing, saying,à ââ¬Å"Hitchensââ¬â¢ death was an unmitigated disaster But three weeks later,â⬠he paused to knock on wood, ââ¬Å"I inherited his love of life.â⬠On the source of inspiration and the writing process: Amis said the best description for the first appearance of inspiration was Vladimir Nabokovsa throb. You wont know when or from where it will come to you, but the moment that you realize it has, an ache will start to pervade your body. And the most abstract ideas can awake a story within you; Amis referenced Nabokovs inspiration for writing Lolita as an example, which the Russian author famously described himself: The first little throb ofà Lolitaà went through me late in 1939 or early in 1940, in Paris somehow prompted by a newspaper story about an ape in the Jardin des Plantes, who, after months of coaxing by a scientist, produced the first drawing ever charcoaled by an animal: this sketch showed the bars of the poor creatures cage. You can almost see how Lolita could have come from that, Amis remarked, but still, its a large jump.à Clearly, inspiration is a mysterious beast. The author further mentioned of the creative writing process how his stepmotherhis father Kingsley Amis second wife, Elizabeth Jane Howardcouldnt begin a new novel without being able to write exactly what it was about on the back of an envelope. Amis, though he does not follow the exact same process, says he adopts this tactic when editing his final drafts. Anything that doesnt fulfill the purpose set out in that one sentence summary of the novel must be cut. From there, Amis read two excerpts from his newly published novel Lionel Asbo: State of England. The title gives two clues to the reader of what to expect. One is of the lead characters dispositionthe professional criminal at the heart of the story renamed himself after Britains notoriousà Anti-Social Behaviour Order. The second is the admission that the novel, in Amis mind, encompasses the state of England today. Although, asked about what he thought of the countrys decline, Amis spoke with very little disdain. He argues that this decline is the natural result of the loss of Britains governance in the world, something that was never meant to be. And though the dark characters of his novels, like Lionel, appear distasteful and vulgar, he admitted that he loves every one of them in their own special way. Hearkening in theme to a Dickensian tale while drawing upon almost caricatured pop culture references, Lionel Asbo has already been hailed as the unintended sequel to Money. And that,à surely, seals this as a novel Martin Amis fans will not find disappointing. Reflection on Interview Paper - Assignment Example For this interview that I have selected, I believe that my understanding and information regarding Shell would benefit me in case if someone would ask me anything related to the company. It is highly important to know your potential organization in order to avoid any embarrassment. This would create a negative image of yourself and of your personality on the minds of your employers. Therefore, I tend to appear as a knowledgeable and informative person when it comes on knowing your employers. This would also enable you to appear confident that you know each and everything in detail about your employers. How Well I Have Answered The Questions: It is not right to say that I have answered all the questions in the right manner. I believe that your answer should be appropriate no matter if you have answered it in a right way or the wrong way. Your answers should reflect your personality, your thinking and your professional approach. I think I would have answered Question 4 (How do you work under pressure) in a more detailed manner. My answer should be: ââ¬Å"I enjoy working in a challenging yet, stimulating environment. Time management and prioritizing responsibilities are the key factors in effectively managing your work under extreme pressure and stress. When managing with stress and pressure, I believe that panicking is not the right attitude. I enjoy challenges as they make you learn different things such as how to deal with stress, how to avoid pressure, you can come up with different solutions and develops a problem-solving attitude in you.â⬠This shows my attitude, my personality, and my problem solving approach on my employers. However, it is necessary to be more descriptive with your answers where necessary rather than going for the shortest possible answers. Shorts answers can sometimes create a negative impact of your personality on the minds of your employers. However, try to be rational, show your confidence, be polite and just be yourself. I belie ve that a person should appear what he/ she is rather than acting what he/ she is not. The Use of Databases Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The Use of Databases - Essay Example While selecting a database for a small organization like real estate business, Microsoft Access is the best. It gives an easy layout to design a database of our own, with wizard facility. In a small real estate business, tens of customers visit everyday and tell us about their requirements. Some needs to have house on rent and some wants to buy a house. Even few comes here to sell their house. So in order to keep a record of all these, we need to have a Database. So that whenever a customer comes here to seek a house on rent, we can show him/her a list that contains all the houses that we got. It can only be done with the help of a Database. A Database can not only store the information but it can give us the printable form of the data as well in Reports. The first thing while develop a Database is that we created tables, as they actually store the data in them. But the interface is provided with the help of forms. And we can access the data in our Database with the help of Queries that works simply as question been asked.
